Slackware HowTo

Configure Btrfs subvolumes and snapshots on Slackware

Use subvolumes and snapshots for labs, test data, and quick rollbacks.

1. When to use it

Useful when you want to experiment with quick changes without recreating the filesystem from scratch each time.

Btrfs | subvolume | snapshot | filesystem | rollback

2. Base setup

mkfs.btrfs /dev/sdb1
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
btrfs subvolume create /mnt/@data
btrfs subvolume snapshot /mnt/@data /mnt/@data-snap-$(date +%F)

Adjust host names, IPs, interfaces, paths, and versions to the real system before making the change persistent.

3. Quick verification

btrfs subvolume list /mnt
btrfs filesystem usage /mnt
mount | grep btrfs

Confirm that the output matches the expected state before considering the intervention complete.

4. Operational notes

Snapshots are not backups: without a second copy you remain exposed to the same physical failures as the original disk.
