Configure ulimit and shell limits on Slackware

1. When to use it

This helps when a process hits implicit limits and fails without clear messages.

2. Base setup

ulimit -n 4096
printf 'ulimit -n 4096\n' >> /etc/profile.d/local-limits.sh
chmod +x /etc/profile.d/local-limits.sh

Adjust host names, IPs, interfaces, paths, and versions to the real system before making the change persistent.

3. Quick verification

ulimit -a
sh -lc 'ulimit -n'
grep -n 'ulimit -n' /etc/profile.d/local-limits.sh

Confirm that the output matches the expected state before considering the intervention complete.

4. Operational notes

Interactive shells are not enough for daemons: apply the limit in the rc script or startup wrapper too.
