Handle .new files on Slackware after updates

Do not blindly overwrite active files with the .new version: you may lose important local settings.

1. Find .new files

find /etc -name "*.new" -print
slackpkg new-config

2. Compare before replacing

diff -u /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.new
vimdiff /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.new   # if available

3. Recommended approach

Backup the current file
Compare with .new
Manually merge useful differences
Test the service
Remove the .new only after verification

cp /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/ssh/sshd_config.bak-$(date +%F)

4. Typical examples

sshd_config.new
httpd.conf.new
ntp.conf.new
configs in /etc/rc.d/ or services installed/updated

5. Final cleanup

After merge and tests you can remove the related .new file.

rm /etc/ssh/sshd_config.new

Keep a backup copy until you confirm everything works after reboot/service restarts.
